What’s the toughest problem you’ve had to troubleshoot on an aircraft and how did you solve it?

The "urban legends" when it comes to engine operations and the myths that are constantly tossed around.  Many pilots and owners sometimes don't refer to the aircraft operations manual or the engine operations and maintenance manual as they should.  Many operators of piston engines fail to listen to professionals with vast experience like Mike Busch but rather rely on the "pilot in the next hanger" for operational instructions of their engines.  Many pilots refuse to do their own "open, assist, and close" when it's annual time.  They could learn a great deal by just assisting their A&P or IA perform their annual.  Plus, it helps them learn so much about their own aircraft.

@avi8tor That’s such an interesting point. It’s surprising how often people overlook the manuals or experienced professionals in favor of hearsay. Do you think more owners would change their approach if they got hands-on during annuals and saw what goes into maintenance?
